Perseids Meteor Shower

Isn't it always a coincidence to see a meteor show int he movies or on tv like it's a once in a lifetime event? Well meteor showers happen more often than you think.

In 2010 there are actually seven visible meteor showers; the next one is Perseids.

Perseids is scheduled for the night of August 12 to early morning. The best times for tonight's meteor shower will be anytime after midnight.

If you are in a city, try to get away from all the lights. The meteor shower can be best seen away from all the lights that glow and actually brighten up the sky.

If you can't catch tonight's meteor shower don't fret! The next scheduled shower is set for October 21.

X Games 16 and U.S. Open of Surfing this Summer!!

Here at Botanical Wisdom, we like extreme sports, and it doesn't get much better for extreme sports than the X Games and the U.S. Open of Surfing, both going down this summer 2010!

X Games 16:
From July 29 to August 1, you can experience the 16th annual action sports event in downtown L.A. between the STAPLES Center, Nokia Theatre, the Los Angeles Coliseum and L.A. LIVE. X-Games 16 will mark the seventh consecutive event in the Los Angeles area. What makes this the best X Games is the 31 hours of live HD programming on ESPN and ESPN2 which will be airing over four days. ESPN3.com will also be offering online viewing and nightly updates of course on ESPN Sportcenter! X Games 16 will feature: Moto X, Rally Car racing, Skateboarding, and BMX riding. U.S. Open of Surfing:
The nine-day event takes place from July 31 through August 8th in Huntington Beach, California. The U.S. Open of Surfing 2010 is once again showcasing elite athletes, fashion and music with over 50 years of competitive surfing history at the famed Huntington Beach Pier. The U.S. Open of Surfing is presented by Hurley, Nike 6.0 and Converse who will host 500 world-class athletes and expects to bring in more than 500,000 spectators over the nine day event. Surfing's biggest names will be at Surfing's biggest event!

BW is a FIFA fan !

FUTBOL! Better known as soccer here in the states. If you don't know what FIFA is, then you've probably been living under a rock with Patrick and Sponge Bob in Bikini Bottom. The Federation Internationale de Football Association's World Cup, which is being held in South Africa, has been going on since June 11 and ends on July 11. The competition is currently down to the quarter finals from a round of 16, with 8 teams left. Those 8 teams are Argentina vs Germany, Paraguay vs Spain, Uruguay vs Ghana and Netherlands vs Brazil. Soccer is by far one of the more popular sports around the world.





Here are some FIFA 2010 World Cup related interesting facts :

22,000 jobs were created during the construction of the football stadiums

415,000 were indirectly created due to the World Cup event

There are a total of 10 stadiums built for the round of 16 competition

The Cape Town Stadium costs the most of the 10 stadiums, at $600 Million

The Soccer City stadium is known to be the largest stadium in Africa and has been built specifically to host football matches. It can accommodate the most fans at 94,700 seats.

The first World Cup was held in Uruguay in 1930.

The youngest player to play in a World Cup match was Northern Ireland's Norman Whiteside against Yugoslavia in 1982. He was 17 years, 41 days old.

A total of 200 teams entered the race for one of the 31 places at the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa.

FIFA World Cup 2010 is being anticipated as the most viewed and broad casted sports event in history.

The BP Oil Spill. How you can help !

The BP (one of the largest energy companies) oil spill is THE biggest spill to date in the Gulf of Mexico since 1980. The oil well is a mile deep, and has now leaked approximately 140.6 million gallons and still counting. Although, it is not the biggest oil spill in history, any oil spill is destructive in so many ways.





Red flags can be found all over the Gulf Coast, warning beach goers not to swim or touch the contaminated waters. Streaks of oil can be seen near the Florida coast, with occasional lumps of oil washing up on the Pensacola shore. The oil spill have taken away the simple things in life, from letting kids play and swim at the beach, to leisure fishing off the shore.

But on a more serious note, the spill has taken the lives of 11 workers back in April, when a rig blew up. A tremendous heartache and loss to friends and family. Not many people realize it, but fishing is a huge industry. Many have been gravely effected financially because fishing is their only source of income, which then takes a toll on family and marriages. Just like past oil spills, this disaster will take a toll economically, mentally and emotionally on many.

Currently, there have been relief efforts on cleaning up oil on land and in water. Big vessels, such as the one dubbed as "A Whale," are out in the ocean scooping up the contaminated water and pouring out clear and clean water. This process is called oil skimming. On shore and off shore efforts are still strong and continuous, but not all efforts have shown to be 100% effective. BP and various organizations are working hard to come up with new solutions everyday.

BW in Whole Foods Magazine!

Whole Foods Magazine releases an article summing up the success of this past June's natural products tradeshow. Botanical Wisdom's head of public relations, Jostin Munar, had the honor of being featured in the article commenting on what it was like being a first time exhibitor.

First time exhibiting company Botanical Wisdom indicated the event was “was an extremely productive show for us,” according to Jostin Munar, head of public relations. Commenting on the show’s size, he stated “It was a welcome change of pace and place being at a smaller show without the hustle and bustle of the public that traditionally accompanies public show. At this show, we had the opportunity to really spend time with our guests while they were at our booth. Giving the attendees a great time at the show and our booth is just as important as us having a good showing.

Many people take dietary supplements in an effort to be well and stay healthy. With so many dietary supplements available and so many claims made about their health benefits, how can a consumer decide what's safe and effective? This fact sheet provides a general overview of dietary supplements, discusses safety considerations, and suggests sources for additional information.

• Federal regulations for dietary supplements are very different from those for prescription and over-the-counter drugs. For example, a dietary supplement manufacturer does not have to prove a product's safety and effectiveness before it is marketed.
• If you are thinking about using a dietary supplement, first get information on it from reliable sources. Keep in mind that dietary supplements may interact with medications or other dietary supplements and may contain ingredients not listed on the label.
• Tell your health care providers about any complementary and alternative practices you use, including dietary supplements. Give them a full picture of what you do to manage your health. This will help ensure coordinated and safe care.

About Dietary Supplements

Dietary supplements were defined in a law passed by Congress in 1994 called the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA). According to DSHEA, a dietary supplement is a product that:

• Is intended to supplement the diet
• Contains one or more dietary ingredients (including vitamins, minerals, herbs or other botanicals, amino acids, and certain other substances) or their constituents
• Is intended to be taken by mouth, in forms such as tablet, capsule, powder, softgel, gelcap, or liquid
• Is labeled as being a dietary supplement.

Herbal supplements are one type of dietary supplement. An herb is a plant or plant part (such as leaves, flowers, or seeds) that is used for its flavor, scent, and/or therapeutic properties. "Botanical" is often used as a synonym for "herb." An herbal supplement may contain a single herb or mixtures of herbs.

Research has shown that some uses of dietary supplements are effective in preventing or treating diseases. For example, scientists have found that folic acid (a vitamin) prevents certain birth defects, and a regimen of vitamins and zinc can slow the progression of the age- related eye disease macular degeneration. Also, calcium and vitamin D supplements can be helpful in preventing and treating bone loss and osteoporosis (thinning of bone tissue).

Research has also produced some promising results suggesting that other dietary supplements may be helpful for other health conditions (e.g., omega-3 fatty acids for coronary disease), but in most cases, additional research is needed before firm conclusions can be drawn.
